Bar Shiru
Biography & Highlights
Telegraph Avenue outside Bar Shiru hums with late-night traffic while the door guy checks IDs under the dim glow of the neon sign. You walk inside and the wall-to-wall vinyl racks hit you right away. It's a Japanese-style listening bar where the sound system does the heavy lifting, pumping crisp jazz and soul through massive custom speakers.
There's no rowdy dance floor or smashed beer cans here. People sit at the wooden counter or low leather chairs, nursing highballs and craft cocktails while the bartender drops a fresh record onto the turntable. The lighting stays low, casting warm shadows across rows and rows of album jackets stacked behind the bar. It's quiet enough to talk without screaming, but loud enough that nobody cares about your bad weekend stories.
You won't find cheap pitchers on tap or a sweaty mosh pit by the front window. It's all about sitting back, nursing an old fashioned, and watching folks nod their heads to deep cuts you've never heard of before. The bill stings a little when it lands, but you're paying for the pristine sound and the rare pressing spinning on the deck.
